Zambales

in the last 30 some years Ive only come across one other marine that can realte to the action I saw against the NPA while we were humping in the Zambales. It wasnt a great firefight but one Ill always remember.
We were humping up what was referred to as the 7 steps to hell.Im not sure who named it that but it fit perfect.
We were assigned a recon unit and IMHO they screwed up.I cant recall how long or high we humped and climbed but Ill tell you this ,my guys were dropping like flies. It wasnt long before we were running short on water and heat exhaustion was starting to set in along with heat stroke.
Due to the terrain I couldnt get a medivac in so we carried these poor guys which only put more stress on the healthy ones. Finally about mid afternoon the first day I managed to get a chopper in cause we found a clear space in the canopy. No sooner did I get these guys aboard when the order to move out came.At least now we had supplies. Our goal was to reach the top and set up camp. That night the rain started and we damn near froze.Im sure anyone here whos sat in a monsoon can relate and it seemed like it rained forever. After a few days it no longer mattered everything was wet and we were talking about getting the hell back down.We started our own recon and suddenly came across an NPA outfit doing the same as us,riding out the rain. There was some small arms fire which only made it worse for us.Luckily no one was hit because the thought of getting a chopper in was nill.
Its funny how glorious a firefight seems in the movies. All I remember was keeping my head down and hearing sporadic shots hoping like hell no one was hit. This went on for about a day and we lost sight of them.Thats when the decision was made to get back to the beach because our recon team found a river not to far from us and we figured this to be the fastest way down. And it was.But it was also a harder hump then the one up.I stuck with my Gunny who pushed me cause guys were dropping like flies. Our Lt even collapsed which didnt bother me too much cause him and I didnt quite agree on some things. His collapse seemed to mellow him out later on thankfully.
This as I recall was the first time I remember being fired upon and although its not a story filled with glory its still something Ill never forget.

Forum: War Stories

I dont care about the news because we all know its biased.I do care about trying to keep track of it and thanks to the internet thats gives me a good access to all the news.Luckily I have a diverse field of sites i visit and I try to keep up on all the news.
The norm of our society doesnt even have a clue.If they watch the morning shows or the talk shows and thats it they are really missing out on a lot.Now Im not here to preach my beliefs .Those I have made based on a lot of information from a lot of sources. What bothers me is that most of the norm of our society is not.
Im not sure what the answer is but what Im trying to do is not respond with anger but with information.Sometimes thats all thats needed.
Yep,I dont appreciate what Im being called by some of our countrys leaders.
Maybe I am a "Right Wing Extremist".I still want to be an informed one because as we all know, because we fought for this,Its easy to lead the blind.
Besides what the other option, being a "Wrong Wing Extremist"?

Forum: In The News!

Hotel Rawanda!

I saw a movie today that's been around for a number of years, you might have seen it, it called Hotel Rwanda. It was about genocide, war and a hotel manager in Rwanda somewhere in Africa. This movie was based on a true story that took place during the early 90's from what I could gather.

So why am I writing about this movie. It's been about 39 years since I got back from Vietnam, and this movie as I watched it, I found myself having a flashback. What caused me to have this flashback was seeing all the death, particularly among the women, children and old people.

For all you Jarheads that have been to the poorest of countries during your time in service, you know what's it like to see destitute people living on the edge. For those of you who have been in combat you know the suffering we endured, and also the suffering the women, children and old people endured.

Sure I know that there was also people in the categories I just mention that were trying to kill us too. But I also believe that the majority of the civilian population, at least in my war, Vietnam were not, at least I thought so anyway.

So where does the flashback come in. As I was watching the end of the movie where refugees where escaping to the safety of the UN Camps, all of a sudden I remembered some real bad fire fights.

I remembered taking small arms fire, RPG and God only knew what else was being thrown at us, as we made our way inside a ville that we were sweeping. I remember throwing my rifle with the sling across my chest and the rifle on my back and picking up two little Vietnamese kids, one under each arm, and run for cover. I also saw another Marine running with a little old Vietnamese lady over his shoulder and also head for cover.

Once we got them out of the way the fire fight ensued. You know what got to me was that I've never to this day seen much documentary news coverage about the good things we did, getting Vietnamese out of the way even in the middle of a fire fight. But I know that we did not do it because we were trying to get recognition, but because even as combat Marines we had a moral obligation to save innocent human life.

I believe that even though we were trained for combat, most Americans also have instilled in them a deep since of right from wrong, and maybe even for a minute saw our own families in the faces of little children, women, old people. I even ran across Marines that had adopted a stray puppy into their ranks and gave it water from their canteens and fed it C-Rats, poor dog.

I hope I didn't drag this on for too long, but this movie Hotel Rwanda inspired me to share this with you my Fellow Marines. Oh by the way as I went into my memories of this I felt a lump in my throat and some light tears in my eyes. I remember I said to myself; it's still there after all these years.

Semper Fi!

Gunny Sanchez

Forum: War Stories

Red Neck Lent!

This was sent to me by one og the members of my Marine Corps League Post!

Each Friday night after work, Bubba would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison steak.

But, all of Bubba's neighbors were Catholic...And since it was Lent, they were forbidden from eating meat on Friday.

The delicious aroma from the grilled venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The Priest came to visit Bubba, and suggested that he become a Catholic.

After several classes and much study, Bubba attended Mass...and as the priest sprinkled holy water over him, he said, 'You were born a Baptist, and raised a Baptist, but now you are a Catholic.

Bubba's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled venison filled the neighborhood.

The Priest was called immediately by the neighbors, and, as he rushed into Bubba's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold him, he stopped and watched in amazement.
There stood Bubba, clutching a small bottle of holy water which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat and chanted: "You wuz born a deer, you wuz raised a deer, but now you is a catfish."

Forum: Sea Stories!
